Thanksgiving might be my favorite holiday. It’s all the good parts of Christmas—family, friends and food—minus the stresses of shopping and logistics.
Over the weekend, Caroline and I celebrated an early Thanksgiving with a large group of friends. I was struck again by just how rich our lives have been since moving to Pocahontas County almost exactly two years ago.
When we purchased our house, Caroline and I imagined it as a base of operations for exploring Nature’s Mountain Playground. A place to escape the bustle of DC and reconnect with nature.
We didn’t expect that we would find our community. That we’d see someone we know every time we went to the grocery store, the café, the tavern. That we would spend evenings with people from an incredibly diverse set of backgrounds and interests, some born just down the street and others born on the other side of the globe, and all united by our love of this wonderful place.
I certainly didn’t expect to be working with the library.
So, here on this day we set aside for doing that which we really ought to remember to do daily, I’d like to offer up some thank yous:
To the people of Pocahontas County, for welcoming Caroline and me into the community. I’ve not once felt like a stranger here.
To my friends, for the conversations, the laughs and for being good-natured about the (sometimes-ridiculous) board games.
To Caroline, for being an incredible partner and the kindest person I know. Thanks for sharing your life with me.
To Jaynell and the staff at The Pocahontas Times, for offering us this space to talk with you each week.
To the County Commission and all our other fun ders, for supporting the important mission of the library.
To my library colleagues, for all the amazing work you do to enrich the lives of those in our communities.
To all the many volunteers and donors who help us to keep our library branches running smoothly and efficiently.
And, of course, to all our library patrons. You brighten our day every time you step through our doors.
