Editor,

Socialism and Communism on the surface seem like the answer to a more prosperous and peaceful world and since they provide simple answers to complex problems they have a cult like appeal.

Sadly, history reveals that neither ideology considers human nature. Previous attempts to implement these systems in their pure form have proven to be disastrous causing the death and suffering of tens of millions. Venezuela is but one current example. As that country fails, and poverty becomes widespread, those in power make staying in power their primary goal and double down on failed policies as that country continues to spiral downward.

The left wing of the Democratic Party seems intent on following this example and are not the answer. I fear if they succeed, the result will also create a similar disaster. Our country’s system of capitalism with a degree of socialism is far from perfect and in need of improvement. Pure capitalism without reasonable safeguards can also be problematic.

Closing the loopholes in our tax code bought and paid for by the rich and special interest groups through lobbying and pay offs to members of Congress stands out as a good place to start. Health care costs and tuition are also out of control. We cannot continue spending more money than we take in every year without a train wreck.

These are just a few of the areas that need work. I believe that these problems can be addressed without a bigger government and a pure socialist suicide pact which is where the left is heading.

Can the Trump administration fix these problems, only time will tell but we should all hope they do and work with them to get positive results in the real world. Blocking these attempts and calling it resistance is not helpful. It is easy to contact the White House to let your feelings be heard and encourage fixing problems. https://www.white house.gov/contact/
