Kathleen Mitchell, age 104, of Parkersburg, died January 29, 2020, at Wyngate Senior Living Community.
Born in St. Marys, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Benjamin M. and Elizabeth Pennell Mitchell.
Kathleen graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1931 and Ohio State University in 1945. She was employed by the Wood County Bank, Federal Housing Administrations in Parkersburg and Charleston, Pleasants County Board of Education, Mutual Broadcasting System of New York City, WGN-TV-Chicago and the College Entrance Examination Board in Evanston, Illinois. She was a correspondent for the St. Marys Oracle. During her retirement years she wrote feature articles for the Parkersburg News and Sentinel about Elderhostel events and those of the Chautauqua Institution, which she and her sister enjoyed.
She was co-author with her late sister, Wanda B. Mitchell, of “Stories We Can’t Forget” (More Than a Memoir by Two West Virginia Sisters with a Zest for Living).
Kathleen was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the Crusaders Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Parkersburg High School Alumni Association, Phi Chi Theta business fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma business honorary and the choir at the 1954 Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches meeting.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Nellie Mae Mitchell, and sister, Wanda B. Mitchell.
Funeral service was held February 2 at the Vaughan Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Reverend Brian L. Daugherty officiating. Interment was in I.O.O. F. Cemetery at St. Marys.
Memorials may be made to the Reverend and Mrs. B.M. Mitchell Scholarship Fund, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, or to the St. Paul’s United Methodist Building Fund, 11th and Market Streets, Parkersburg.
