Katherine Sue “Kitty” Bussard Smith, age 92, of Stafford, Virginia, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015, at Casey Hospice House in Rockville, Maryland.

Born May 28, 1923, in Marlinton, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Given and Annie Dever Bussard.

Following her graduation from Marlinton High School in 1941, Katherine moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Army War College. She worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a payroll clerk from 1946 until her retirement in 1983.

Katherine was an avid gardener, duck pin bowler and lover of opera music.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Eric Smith; and a sister, Frances Bussard.

She is survived by a son, Steven B. Smith, and wife, Kim, of Stafford, Virginia; a daughter, Tamma Hammond, and husband, John, of Brookeville, Maryland; a sister, Mary Jean Moore, of Morgantown; a brother, Clyde G. Bussard, Jr., and wife, Emily, of Port Orange, Florida; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was November 9 at VanReenen Funeral Home with Rev. David Merryman officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery.
