James Madison Workman III, 85, of Mt. Ulla, North Carolina, passed away Friday, August 16, 2024, at his home.
Born November 22, 1938, in Pocahontas County, he was a son of the late James Andrew Workman II and Edith Nancy Mitchell Workman.
Jimmy graduated from Hillsboro High School and played football at Glenville State University. He enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country. After serving his first term, he married Judy, and they had their first child, Jamie. Soon after, he was recalled to serve his country again. After completing his second term, he moved to North Carolina, where he started a career, built a home, and continued to build his family. Jimmy retired from RJR Nabisco after 30 years. He loved hunting, fishing, farming, gardening, and sweets. He enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels and as a coach for sports teams. He loved quiet walks in the woods and his family, for whom he was a natural protector and provider. His love of the outdoors and survival skills were handed down to many around him. He was quick to make folks laugh and could always be counted on to sing a silly song to his grandchildren with a grin and a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Judith Loury Workman.
Jimmy is survived by his children, Jamie Workman and Elizabeth Stapleton (Greg); siblings, Libby Workman Hollandsworth (Joe) and Skeeter Workman (Nora); grandchildren, Andy Workman (Lori), Kimberly Trimnal (Bobby), Jonathan Workman, Jessica Stapleton, and Jamieson Stapleton; and great-grandchildren, Kinsley and Kerrigan Trimnal.
A Celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held at a later date in West Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VIA Health Partners, Hospice and Palliative Care, 7845 Little Ave., Charlotte, NC 28226, or to Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, 7479 Seneca Trail, Hillsboro, WV 24946.
