James Newton Sheets, Sr., age 78, of Hope Mills, North Carolina, formerly of Dur-bin, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Born April 12, 1938, at Durbin, he was a son of the late Allie and Birdie Greathouse Sheets.
James was a 1956 graduate of Green Bank High School. He was a retired MP with the United States Army and served in both the Marines from 1956 to 1960, and the United States Army from 1961 to 1981.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Newton, Jr., in 1988; two sisters; and a brother.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Vannoy Sheets; and a son, Dean Sheets, of Hope Mills, North Carolina.
A graveside service with Military Honors was July 9 in the Bethel Church Cemetery on Back Mountain Road, Durbin, with Pastor Allen Johnson officiating.
