During the Senior Awards Night June 9, the Career and Technical Education students were recognized for completing in at least one of the CTE fields offered at Pocahontas County High School.

Twenty-seven of the 50 students in the Class of 2026 were completers.

Every student who completes in a CTE area is required to take the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute – NOCTI – test in their content area. Based on how well they perform, they are eligible for several awards.

The NOCTI West Virginia Workforce Certificate recognizes students who successfully met the workforce entry-level score for their content area.

Students who score above a 70 percent on their NOCTI are eligible for three hours of college credit in their respective fields.

The National Technical Honor Society recognizes CTE completers who have a 3.3 GPA or higher, exhibit strong character, leadership and community service.

Students in the carpentry and welding programs have the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA. In this student organization, students can to compete in various skill sets based on the classes in which they participated.

Receiving at least one of these awards were Shayla Bennett, Warren Burns, Colton Cover, Luke Gainer, Ramona Hardy, Joseph Van Meter, Shane Van Meter, Kaden Wayne and Nathaniel Wimer.

New River Community Technical College offers an EMT training program at PCHS to students age 16 years and older. Students who complete the course will earn five credit hours through New River.

The students complete several lessons, quizzes, tests and skills throughout the course and must complete a minimum of 10 field patient contacts. Students also take a state psychomotor examination where they will be evaluated on their skill proficiency and knowledge prior to being eligible to sit for the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification.

EMT Completers are Heidi Jordan, Calli Propst, Whitney Robertson, Shane Van Meter and Cammi Warner.
