FIRE TRAGEDY
Eugene Pifer and Charles “Buck” Bell died Friday evening in a fire at the Pifer house on upper Third Avenue in Marlinton, across from the pulp yard. When smoke was noticed on the outside and the fire department called, the fire had already made great headway inside. Those getting there first were unable to enter because of the flames. The fire department soon put the fire out, but Pifer was found in his rocking chair and Bell on the floor.
Some lab work is still being done but it is the opinion of the State Fire Marshal that the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette, or something placed over the heat register causing the heat to build up and igniting it.
CRANBERRY BACK COUNTRY
In a last-minute action, credited to Congressman Staggers, 36,000 acres of Cranberry Back Country was included in the Eastern Wilderness Bill, providing for a two year study of the area.
The bill was made ready for the President before Christmas. About two-thirds of this is in Pocahontas. If it is made a wilderness area, it will prevent timbering, but we understand it does not prevent deep mining.
MULTIFLORA
Washington – U. S. Senator Jennings Randolph said Wednesday he has been advised by the Environmental Protection Agency that an experimental permit has been approved for the application in West Virginia of 300,000 pounds of Tordon 10K, the pesticide used for eradication of multiflora rose… He pointed out, however that it might take from three to five years to eradicate all multiflora rose in the state and to properly treat the affected land area.
