The number of deer killed in Pocahontas last week was about 1,069, which is about the same as the first week’s count of last year.
Mrs. Nowlin Sheets reported the biggest deer they checked was a 14-point buck, killed by Mrs. Lyle Campbell, of Marlinton.
Beverage’s Store said the extra big one they checked was a deer killed by Earl Beverage, of Clover Lick. It had an extra big rack, 10 points, and weighed 165 pounds hog dressed. Matheny’s checked another 14-point buck and Marion’s Country Market did also, but they didn’t have the people’s names.

Kermit Friel kept a Saw-Whet Owl alive for several days after it flew into the side of his car. He hopes to have it mounted. This small, eight-inch owl has a little round head and nests in hollow trees or deserted squirrel or woodpecker holes. It sleeps so soundly; the book says it can hardly be aroused in the daytime. This is a little south of its breeding area but it goes southward in bad weather.
FIRE
A big fire in Summersville Wednesday destroyed several buildings housing Harold’s Hardware Store, Elizabeth’s Shop and others. Damage was estimated at $1,500,000. Fred Burns, Jr., Johnnie Nelson, Doug Dunbrack, Ronnie Peacock and DeWayne Rhea, Marlinton firemen, joined the fire departments from all over Nicholas County in fighting the blaze.

A BIT OF HUMOR
A closed mouth gathers no foot.
Good character, like good soup, is usually homemade.
Most of us would be willing to accept advice from people smarter than we are – if we could find any.
Inflation has one good result – nobody marries for money anymore.
