Deer Season
A wet snowstorm with temperatures dropping made it uncomfortable for the deer hunters Monday.
Campers streamed into the county and some through the county from Thursday through Sunday nights. There seems to be more hunters than usual this year and first day checkings showed a good kill.
The one accident was the sad death of Sterl Carpenter on Clover Creek at the very opening of the season. He swung his gun around at a coon, it hit a rock and broke the forearm, exploding the shell.
A young man was lost all night on Mill Mountain near Thornwood and was found unharmed by Forest Service men Tuesday morning.
First thing Monday morning, Wayne Curry killed a four-point buck, his first deer, in exactly the same place he killed a turkey the first morning of turkey season.

THANKSGIVING DAY
Thanksgiving Day ; Thanksgiving Day;
Oh, it has come once more,
And does our thankfulness keep pace,
With basket and with store?
Bread daily given, waters sure,
Health, comfort, friends and home –
Not from the ground to us arise,
Whence do these mercies come?
Lift up our eyes and view the Hand
Supplying all our need
And think! One day of giving thanks,
Is small return indeed.
Surely, in church, at home, afield
We hail Thanksgiving Day,
And bless our gracious Lord above
Who guides us on our way.
