Richard Reigel, Bill McCloud and Elvin McQuain are among Forest Service personnel going to Alleghe-ny National Forest in Pennsylvania to assist in estimating timber volume. On June 30, a storm caused approximately nine million board feet of saw timber and 10,000 cords of pulpwood to be blown down.

OUR BOYS AND GIRLS IN SERVICE

Specialist 4 Harlan L. Whiting, formerly of Marlinton, was recently promoted to his present rank. Spec. 4 Whiting attended Marlinton High School. He is presently assigned to the 4th Psychological Operations Group as a printing platemaker. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation and Good Conduct Medal.

SNOWSHOE

Jean Claude Killy, the Frenchman whose skiing performance at the 1968 Winter Olympics has never been equaled, is returning to Snowshoe, his American resort home, for a brief visit.

The occasion, a press preview of the exciting new ski resort due to open here this winter. The opening is just one month before Killy expects to make his comeback debut on the World Professional Skiing Tour…

PCHS Homecoming

The Queen of the fifth Annual Homecoming of Pocahontas County High school will be chosen from among three girls during the half time ceremonies of the PCHS vs Webster County game.

Vying for the royal title will be Marla Chestnut, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Murl Chestnut, of Dunmore; Betty Jo Gum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Basil Gum, of Cass; and Cheryl Wade, daughter of Mrs. Betty J. Wade, of Hillsboro.

Marla will be escorted by Mike Scott, son of Mrs. Hallie Mae Scott, of Marlinton; Betty Jo’s escort will be Tim Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard T. Brown, of Clover Lick; and Cheryl will be escorted by Kenneth Pritt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hill Pritt, of Droop.

The Queen’s Court will consist of senior attendant Peggy Rosencrance; junior attendant, Virginia Cloonan; sophomore Joyce Simmons; and freshman Teresa Rose. Miss Bobby Jo McLaughlin will serve as crown bearer and Phillip McMillion will be scepter bearer.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Madison, of Marlinton, a son, Samuel Lee.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Warren Dale McKenney, of Marlinton a daughter, Susan Raye.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lance Kelly, of Hillsboro, a son, Dulaney Nicolas.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Karol Puffenbarger, of Hillsboro, a daughter, Cristi Anne.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. William O. Taylor, Jr., of Dunmore, a son, William Orville Taylor, III.

DEATHS

Mrs. Carrie Jane Selmon, 66, of Bartow; born in Highland County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Sally Sponaugle Barkley. Burial in the Monterey Cemetery in Monterey, Virginia.

Mrs. Mary E. Simmons Fertig, 36, of Eleanor; born at Stony Bottom, a daughter of Mrs. Alma Simmons and the late Charles Simmons. A graduate of Green Bank High School. Her husband, Winfred Fertig, and one daughter preceded her in death. Funeral service from the Edray church with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Dona L. Cottrell, of Marlinton, a daughter of Salem and Maxine Jordan Elza. Funeral service from the Marlinton Methodist Church with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
