Evelene Hannah Curry, 92, of Pocahontas County, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the Season’s Place Senior Living Facility in Lewisburg.
Born February 19, 1934, on Elk Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Mamie Tyler and Veo Hannah.
Following graduation from Marlinton High School, Evelene went to nursing school in Washington D.C.; however, she soon decided to change her career path.
She married Everett Dulin and they lived in Alexandria, Virginia. with their beloved poodle, Fifi. Evelene became a dog-groomer, and her career work was in the printing and editing department at Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO). She worked many years before she became a widow and soon after developed a brain tumor. She survived surgery and was medically retired, before returning to live with her parents in Pocahontas County. In 2000, Evelene married Curtis Curry and they lived beside the Greenbrier River in a walnut grove near Marlinton. They loved square dancing with their friends and Evelene made many costumes for competition events. They enjoyed hiking the William’s River area, researching and gathering facts for the books Curtis wrote. Curtis passed in 2015 after a brief illness and soon after Evelene sold their home and moved into Season’s Place in Lewisburg.
In addition to her dog grooming skills and dancing, Evelene was an excellent, self-taught seamstress. She upholstered furniture as well. She also spent many relaxing hours crocheting blankets, reading, traveling with family members, gardening and listening to gospel music. She enjoyed bible studies and activities with the ladies of Rose Hill Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Mary’s Chapel on Elk Mountain, and attended Marlinton Presbyterian Church in her later years. Her favorite trip overseas was to the Holy Land, and she was proud of her Scotch-Irish heritage and interested in learning what she could about her ancestors. Although she never had children, Evelene cherished time spent with her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husbands; she was preceded in death by brothers, Kent and Ray Hannah; sister and brother-in-law, Ola and David Hively; sister-in-law, Barbara Hite Shiley; and a grand-nephew, David Howard Hively.
She is survived by neph-ews, Steve Hively (Debbie), of Savannah, Georgia, and Chris Hively (Jennie), of Culpeper, Virginia; nieces, Miriam Hively Cobb (John), of Columbia, South Carolina, and Raye Hannah Guy, of Blacksburg, Virginia; and multiple great-nieces and-nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Seasons Place in Lewisburg for the wonderful care Evelene received over the years and to the many friends who shared her earthly life.
