Marlinton Elementary School has, once again, opened its doors to WVU Extension Energy Express – AmeriCorps program, a dynamic summer initiative designed to bolster children’s reading skills and provide nutritious meals during the summer break.
The site, part of West Virginia University’s statewide initiative, is spearheaded by a dedicated team committed to making a positive impact on local students. Leading the charge is Site Supervisor Devan Gum, who brings years of educational experience and a passion for literacy to the program. Working alongside Devan is AmeriCorps member and Community Coordinator Emma Dean, whose role is crucial in fostering connections between the program and the local community. Emma will be instrumental in organizing volunteer efforts and ensuring that the program meets the unique needs of families in the community.
The heart of the program lies with its four enthusiastic AmeriCorps members and mentors: Ethan Armstrong, Macaden Taylor, Amanda Burns and Peyton Friel.
These mentors provide individualized attention and engage students in a variety of enriching activities. Their dedication and energy are essential to the program’s success, as they inspire children to explore new ideas and develop a love for learning.
Energy Express at Marlinton Elementary runs for six weeks, offering daily sessions that include reading, writing, drama, art and recreational activities and providing breakfast and lunch, ensuring that students receive the nutrition they need to thrive.
We are currently accepting donations of “found objects,” such as toilet paper rolls, cardboard, plastic containers and more.
We are also in search of volunteers willing to read and assist with the program.
