Dorothy Jean Whiting, 80, of Raphine, Virginia, took the hand of our Lord Saturday, August 27, 2022, in the comfort of her home.

Jean was born into a large family in Buckeye. She was the daughter of the late Luther Cole Dulaney and Lucille Hannah Dulaney.

Jean was a tailor at Virginia Military Institute for nearly three decades. She was recently awarded the VMI Meritorious Service Award for her “untiring dedication and passionate service to VMI and the Corps of Cadets.” She was greatly loved and respected by her colleagues.

She was a member in good standing of the Waynesboro Chapter #105 Order of the Eastern Star for 24 years. She served many times in the Office of Marshal for Chapter #105. She composed and mailed the Chapter Newsletter for more than10 years. She held her membership in high regard and truly enjoyed time spent with her Sisters, just as they enjoyed time with her.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her grandson, Zachary; sister, Leona; and brother, Clinston.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Larry Leonard Whiting; their children, Rebecca Lynn Whiting, Karen Grace Alford, Larry Leonard Whiting Jr. (Lauren), and Sharon Renee Buchanan (Curtis); grandchildren Perry, Colton, Tiffany, Heather (Tyler), Samantha (Nick), Morgan (Brent), Jamie (Lucas), Ericka (Steven); 13 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; and siblings, Loretta Simmons, Kenneth Dulaney, Eugene Dulaney, Betty Hollands-worth (Sam), Donald Dulaney and Arnold Dulaney.
Funeral service was held Friday, September 2, 2022, at Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory in Lexington, Virginia.

Immediately following the service, a brief graveside gathering for prayer was held at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.
