Donkeys ~ for the win

For the first time since the late 1980s, Pocahonas County High School welcomed a special kind of athlete – donkeys. Last Saturday, the PCHS athletics department and Durbin Days Heritage Festival hosted a Donkey Basketball game to the delight of the county.
With a standing room only crowd by the time the game started, the stands erupted in laughter as PCHS alums battled against current students to manuever on the hardwood while atop stubborn donkeys.
The first half of the game saw the alums in the lead, but by the end of the night, the score was tied. Everyone left the school a winner.
Above, game co-coordinator Jerry Nelson, right, moves out of the way as Steven Taylor chases down the basketball.
The event, which included an auction, was a fundraiser for the PCHS athletic department and DDHF. Both organizations ended the night with a total of $3,747.25.

Basketball is a game of strategy and teamwork – which can be difficult when your four-legged teammate isn’t willing to budge. It takes a special kind of skill to get a donkey to play basketball, but members of the PCHS alum and the current students teams were able to get their donkeys up and down the court to end the night with a tied game. Playing basketball can be tiring. Taking a break from the game, PCHS senior Macaden Taylor’s donkey rests its head on the back of junior Kelsi Taylor’s donkey.
During half-time of Saturday night’s game, youngsters from the crowd had an opportunity to sit atop a donkey and shoot baskets. At left, Arbovale resident Ethan Jones takes a shot, as Macaden Taylor watches.
