Carolyn Jean Friel Swecker, age 74, of Valley Head, passed from this life late Monday evening, October 20, 2014, at her home surrounded by family.

Born Sunday, March 31, 1940, at Huttonsville, she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Pauline Friel.

On June 29, 1957, she married George Kyle Swecker, in Valley Head. He preceded her in death in 2011.

Carolyn attended Randolph and Pocahontas County schools. She had been employed as postmaster for the United States Postal Service in Valley Head for 30 years, retiring in 1993. She enjoyed flowers, yard work, reading, solving Sudoku puzzles, crocheting and sewing. She especially loved cooking for family, friends and all who stopped by her house. She was of the Methodist faith and a lifelong member of the Valley Head United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Clark; and two brothers, Bill and Darrell.

Left to cherish Carolyn’s memory is a son, Charles “Chuck” Swecker, of Valley Head; a daughter, Pam Kinder, and husband, Mark, of Martinsburg; four grandchildren, Fred Kinder, Fletcher Kinder, AJ Sharp, and husband, Nicholas Maitland, and Blair Ede Campbell, and husband, Charlan; a son-in-law, Eugene Clark; three great-grandchildren, Penelope “Tinker Bell” Campbell, Oliver Campbell and Shelldon Maitland; two brothers, Eddie and Gary; two sisters, Phyllis and Kay and several nieces and nephews.

Per Carolyn’s request, the body was cremated. Graveside service was October 25 at the Valley Head Cemetery with Pastor Leon Brown officiating.
