Alice Underwood

Alice Hively Underwood, age 93, of Warrenton, Virginia, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015, at her home.

Born January 30, 1922, near Dunmore on a farm near Pocahontas County High School, she was a daughter of the late John and Eva Rexrode Hively.

Alice was a 1943 graduate of Marlinton High School. She moved to Washington, D.C., after graduation and worked for Fruit Growers Company as a secretary for several years until 1955, when her first child was born.

Alice married Elton Underwood June 20, 1953, while he was in the United States Air Force. They lived in Fairfax, Virginia, for 36 years, and were active members of the Fairfax United Methodist Church. Alice taught Sunday School class for many years and was an excellent seamstress. She worked out of their home for many years while raising their children. She was very active in all the school activities for the children, where her sewing skills were put to the test on costumes, banners and crafts.

In 1992, Alice and her family moved to Warrenton, Virginia, and worshiped God at Bethel United Methodist Church. She was very active in church activities. She was president of Bethel United Methodist Women and other committees for many years.
Alice and Elton traveled extensively over the years, camping with their children, cruising and spending family time at their farm, “Hilli Villi,” in West Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elton, in 2013; three brothers, Burley Hively, Hunter Hively and Paul Hively; four sisters, Eula Mae Hively, Ann Dodson, Sylvia Johnson and Truda Underwood; and a brother-in-law, Grayson Johnson.

She is survived by two sons, Kelvin Underwood, and wife, Teresa, of Warrenton, Virginia, Blaine Underwood, and wife, Diane, of Manassas, Virginia; a daughter, Karen Nelson, and husband, William, of Warrenton, Virginia; a brother, Don Hively, and wife, Minota, of Dunmore; a sister, Juanita Davis, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; sister-in-law, Glenna Bonnell, of Culpepper, Virginia; grandson, Josh Henry, and wife, Megan; granddaughters, Heather Underwood Trail, and husband, Johnny, and Vanessa Henry Wallace, and husband, Nathan; and five great-grandchildren, Cameryn Trail, Jillian Henry, Bella Henry, Zacory Wallace and Evangelina Wallace.

Funeral service is Saturday, August 1, 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 6903 Blantyre Road, Warrenton, Virginia, with Rev. Marty Martin officiating. Interment will be in Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, Virginia. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
