Some 20 people braved the cold, snow and bitter wind to take part in a celebration of “Guy Fawkes Day” on the Balister farm on Back Mountain Road. This is a British children’s holiday held annually on November 5th, with the burning of a “guy,” a bonfire and fireworks. The holiday commemorates a 16th century Englishman who, with a group of conspirators, plotted to blow up the British Houses of Parliament on the 5th of November 1605. They were caught and later hanged. Some delicious food and hot drinks were brought by the guests and a memorable evening was had by all. It is becoming increasingly difficult to celebrate this holiday in England due to population density, so Poca- hontas County was the setting for a comparatively rare festivity.
