A brief summary of September activity
Like so many things, the application for Home Rule status has taken longer than expected, but it is in progress. At the first of the month, the Town received notice of grant awards from two applications. The first is for another mural in town, maybe two. I have already visited businesses about mural space. By the time you read this, I will have met with an artist to discuss design style and locations. Thank you, Laura Young, for submitting the application, and Stacy Vandevander, for helping to implement. The other award was from the Conservation Fund to be directed toward the Trailhead project
The Conservation Fund Award came quicker than expected and that is requiring conversations with Josh Nease, MFTP ED, and Tim Johnson with Destination by Design, about next steps for the Trailhead project. This project has lots of moving parts.
The 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony at the gazebo never receives the attendance it deserves, but it went well. Thank you to all who did attend and a salute to the faithfulness of the Pocahontas County Honor Corps and our own Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department. The ladder-truck onsite with old glory flying high makes a dramatic statement to all who passed by. God bless America.
Since the September Town Council Meeting, the chain-link security fence with slats has been installed at the Fourth Avenue Town Garage, and it looks great. Hopefully, this will cut down on night-time traffic in dumpsters, and pilfering of vehicles or equipment parked outside.
With all audits turned in, the last Water Project Zoom call went more smoothly.
The Farmers Market completed the season at Discovery Junction Saturday. We are already looking forward to its return in the spring,
I hope it is not too late to give a big shout-out to the organizers of the Fall Festival and Roadkill Cook-off. Considering iffy weather in the morning, all seemed to go well. Thanks again to all who work to make the event possible and all attendees and spectators who fill the town for a day.
NOTE: Vendors can expect more and better placement of trash containers next year. Some dumpsters were running over, others were not used.
