Keep Pocahontas Clean
As we “spring into summer” we marvel at the beauties of nature – the dogwood and honeysuckle, the lovely spring flowers that carpet the woods, the new green everywhere.
Add to this the white of the newly sheared sheep on green meadows, and the cattle. Surely, we are blessed.
Yet, to mar this beauty, much litter will be added. Discipline yourself and train your children to not throw that can out the window or drop that candy wrapper. See that your trash is properly cared for. Some provisions need to be made for landfill dumps and pickup of trash but that doesn’t relieve us of the responsibility to see that it gets proper disposal.
Remember, our county has 2,500 fewer junked cars this year. That’s a big improvement.
Let’s keep up the good work.

In his garden Sunday, Jack Kellison found what looked for all the world like a thin thread that moved, and he was taking it around to see who could identify it. It was six or seven inches long, stretched out, with a half inch of white or semi-transparent look at each end if you looked real close. How he ever saw the thing in the first place is beyond us. Charles Edward McElwee had the answer. The scientific name is gordacia, a nematrode (round worm), and it is of the same family as the horsehair snake, which is very thin and wiry but considerably bigger than this thin thread worm.
