There is one habit which will do much toward making bad men good and good men better. It is one which, if sincerely followed by the people of a nation, will make the nation a better place in which to live. It is the habit of regularly going to church to worship. It is still true that righteousness exalteth a nation.

A fine yearling buck deer was struck by an automobile and killed on the long stretch of road above Frost last Sunday night.

The report comes of the catching of a thirty-two inch brown trout at Three Forks on Williams River one day last week. It weighed eight pounds; being somewhat on the slim order.

One night, last week a bear killed a sheep for Wade Galford up in the Greenbank country. He called for Oscar and Austin Sharp to come with their bear dogs, but they could not quite make it that day. The bear got another sheep, and the call for hunters and dogs was made again. In the meantime, a bear trap was set at the kill. When the bear killers did come, they found the bear had come back for more mutton and he was safely in the trap.
BIRTHDAY
James Norvell Pifer, II, celebrated his seventh birthday Wednesday afternoon, April 14, with a party at his home. Games were played and refreshments served to the following guests: Mrs. Sue Moses, Ann Eskridge, Ann Gay Mason, Shirley Lane, Wanda and Jo Ann Beverage, “Jo” and “Bib” Whitt, Billy and Johnny Shelton, Billy Clarkson, Earl Curry, Denver Lane, Ronny Moses, David Condee, Jimmy and Dougie McGraw.
ENGAGEMENT
The engagement of Miss Mary Alice Young to Will-iam Sherman Beard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Beard, of Hillsboro, has been announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Argabrite Young, of Lewisburg. The wedding will take place Friday, June 11, 1948, at the Lewisburg Methodist Church… Mr. Beard is an alumnus of Greenbrier Military School and served with the AAF in the ETO during the war. He was released from active duty with the commission of first lieutenant.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Gay, of Cloverlick, announce the marriage of their daughter, Opal Frances, to Jack Ardell Byrd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Byrd, of Hunters-ville… The groom, a Navy Veteran, and graduate of Greenbank High School, is now attending Davis and Elkins College…

DEATHS
James Doss passed away April 7, 1948 at his home near Beard… On April 25, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Parrish, who survives. To this union were born six children: Mrs. Lilian Dorman and Charles Doss, of Beard, Robert Doss, of Oceana, Mrs. Ada Jackson, of Renick’s Valley; Mrs. Ruby Fowler, of Baltimore, Maryland; and one son, Ralph, who preceded him to the grave.

Robert B. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Miller, was born March 8, 1863. He departed this life Wednesday, April 21, 1948, at the Parsons hospital. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lula Irvine, of Marlinton, and Mrs. Rosa Tacy, of Cass, and two sons, J. Robert Miller, of Milton, Indiana, and Brown Miller, of Frost… Funeral service was conducted from Smith Funeral Home with interment in the Ruckman Cemetery.

Harry H. Schofield, aged about 70 years, died at his home at Kerryville, Texas… The service will be held from the Marlinton Methodist Church… His body will be laid to rest in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery.

J. Walker Yeager, aged 74 years, died in a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. On Monday afternoon, the funeral was held from the Marlinton Methodist Church with interment in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery. The deceased is survived by two children, Richard C., of Jacksonville, Florida, and Mrs. M. H. Seagraves, of Kaywood.
