Grand Opening
June 7
Durbin Community Library will close May 26 only to open in its new location Sunday afternoon, June 7.
There will be a short ceremony at 2 p.m. with light refreshments as we officially turn on the lights for library services. Joining Pocahontas County Free Libraries Director Vicky Terry, will be Delegate Bill Hartman, Secre- tary of the State Library Commission Karen Goff, and others. Those who contributed to the building’s construction will be acknowledged and there will be a drawing for an amateur Orion Starquest reflector telescope. Tickets for the drawing may be purchased prior to or at the event.
Following the ceremony there will be an open house with a history corner which will offer an opportunity to talk about the history of this special area of the county.
Terry Hackney, of Staun-ton Parkersburg Turnpike Alliance, will be available to discuss the Virginia turnpike which was the first way-of-transportation to this area and its importance when the country went into the Civil War.
Bill McNeel, of the Pocahontas County Historical Society and author of “The Durbin Route,” will be present to discuss the railroad system that sprang up with the lumber boom, but also provided markets for the tanning and farming businesses and swelled the area with new residents.
Jason Bauserman, of Upper Pocahontas Community Cooperative, will talk about his recent historical finds in Durbin, as well as its recent past.
There will be a children’s corner with small craft activities for kids and a chance to play with puppets and puppet theatre. There will be displays on the construction of the library building and the people involved and plans for equipping the future kitchen.
The event will be capped off at 5 p.m. with music and dance calling by Juanita Fireball and the Continental Drifters.
Spend an enjoyable Sunday afternoon at the new Durbin Community Library next door to the Durbin Post Office and in front of the BFD Fire Hall, June 7, from 2 to 7 p.m.
