On Friday, September 10, Marlinton Mayor Sam Felton led a 9/11 Remembrance ceremony for the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. County residents and the Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps gathered at Gazebo Park in Marlinton to honor the memories of the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives that day.
Honor Corps member Donnie Waybright lowers the American flag to half staff while the bells at Marlinton Presbyterian Church rang 13 times in honor of the service members who were killed in the Kabul airport attack on August 26.
During the ceremony, veteran Barry Sharp sang several songs, including “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” written by Alan Jackson about the September 11 attacks.
The Honor Corps presented a 21-gun salute and retired old American flags in an appropriate burning ceremony. S. Stewart photo
