Mystery solved – sort of

Several of our readers called or emailed to identify Winston Lacy, whose grave stone was found along Williams River in one to two feet of dirt.

As it turns out, Winston’s full name was Winston Lacy Herold, and he is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in the Herold family plot. He has a footstone there, much like the one that was found, “except for the corner piece that is broken off,” noted Karen Weadon in her email. That “broken piece” in all likelihood made the footstone unacceptable.

Winston Lacy Herold was a son of Lanty William Herold and Laura Belle McNutt. He was born in Huntersville, June 29, 1885, and was married to Anna Rachel Hicks Herold. He died in Minnehaha Springs September 29, 1950 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Now for the “sort of” solved mystery. We may never know how that footstone made its way to Williams River, but in talking with folks, it seems that finding a gravestone in an odd place isn’t so odd, after all.

While plowing for a garden years ago along the Greenbrier River, a headstone for Joshua Buckley was turned up. It appeared that a grave had been disturbed, but, in reality, the date of death was wrong, so the family used the stone as a step into the grainary.

“Waste not, want not.”
