Ann Golavin, of the Smithsonian Institute, was here last Monday visiting the Museum and some homes around the county. She is starting a study of furniture in West Virginia. An interesting coincidence was that the next day the Museum had a visitor from the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York.
Panther
Austin Sharp, the remaining “bear hunter twin,” tells us he saw something this spring he had never seen before, and if it wasn’t a panther, he doesn’t know what it was. He was turkey hunting in the Black Mountain country and on the other side of a clearing was a cat animal with a long tail, bay colored; it bounded like a cat. In all his years in the woods, he had never seen anything like it.
This past Sunday, Gazette writer Skip Johnson quoted Dr. Robert Smith, WVU professor of wildlife biology, repeating the old story that the mountain lion had vanished from the state in 1887, although two men working for the U. S. National Museum reported panther tracks on Kennison in 1936. We refer Dr. Smith to Dr. Paul Price to hear his panther story.
