Due to the extremely cold temperatures expected tonight through Saturday, February 21, the Pocahontas County Sheriff has announced the enforcement of WV Code 61-18-19(a)(1)(C)(ii):
It is “unlawful for any person to mistreat an animal in a cruel manner, abandon an animal or intentionally withhold shelter that protects from the elements of weather.”
The enforcement of this regulation is put into effect during periods of high heat and humidity, and during conditions of extreme cold, wind and heavy snow which can be life threatening to dogs and other animals.
The Sheriff’s Department wants to remind citizens to be particularly mindful of their pets during this period of extreme cold.
The best advice during times such as this is to bring pets indoors.
Even animals that are accustomed to living outdoors can be susceptible to the dangers of cold weather.
Please take added responsibility to ensure the safety of your pets.
If you see an animal left outside that appears to be in danger or unattended you need to contact Pocahontas County Animal Control or 9-1-1.
Sheriff Deputies will be conducting 24 hour patrols throughout the county to provide policing during this period of extreme weather.
