More than 1,000 people attended the Dedication of Pocahontas County High School November 8. In addition to hearing an excellent inspirational address by Dr. Stewart H. Smith, those attending received a tour of the building. Congratulations to the county education associations for providing refreshments for the event. We appreciated the beautiful flowers furnished by Central Valley Construction Company, Marlinton Flower Shoppe, Alumni of Edray District High School and Marlinton High School, First National Bank of Marlinton, Trumbo Electric Company and the Bank of Marlinton. And we certainly appreciated the Coca Colas furnished by J. M. Kane…
In The News
When we were young, The Baltimore Sun was THE paper, but it has been several years since it has been readily available, mainly due to transportation difficulties and expense. Sunday’s Sun Magazine carried a picture of hands (they belong to Mr. Stella McLaughlin) setting type against a background picture of The Pocahontas Times. Inside are more pictures and a story on our office and publication. Like all stories, the truth is stretched and scrambled in places and a few items mixed up, but we think it was a commendable job by Ralph Reppert and the photographer, Bill Klender, who accompanied him on a visit to the Times office a couple of months ago.
4-H
The meeting of the Buckeye Winners 4-H Club, which was held October 21, 1970, at the Buckeye Community Center for the purpose of reorganization, was called to order by the president, Teddy Moore. The program consisted of singing “West Virginia Boys and Girls,” the 4-H Pledge, devotions, Lord’s Prayer, and a song.
Members reported on completed projects: total for the club was 86. Several livestock and non-livestock exhibits went to the State Fair.
Livestock exhibitors were Price Barlow, Marvin Beverage, Michael Beverage, Lynn Jordan and Teddy Moore, of which Lynn Jordan showed the Champion and Reserve Champion Hampshire ram lambs, Marvin Beverage showed the Reserve Champion Single Market Lamb, and Teddy Moore showed the Champion pen of three and the Champion Single in the Market Lamb Show at the county fair. Marvin Beverage, Michael Beverage, Lynn Jordan, and Teddy Moore stayed at the West Virginia State Fair in the sheep barn, and Teddy Moore showed the Reserve Champion Hampshire Single Market Lamb, and Lynn Jordan won a trophy for having the cleanest livestock pen, which was a very commendable honor…
Club enrollment is approximately twenty-eight members. Officers for the forthcoming year are as follows: President – Michael McNeill, Vice President – Marvin Beverage; Secretary – Cathy Johnson, Treasurer – Lynn Jordan, Reporter – Teddy Moore; Song Leaders – Cathy Johnson and Sara Howard; Game Leaders – Michael Beverage and Don Rider.
