VOTING
Voters turned out in unusual numbers last week all across the nation. Pocahontas had a good average of 79.64 percent.
Marlinton (East) had 88 percent of its voters voting, which ought to be a record. Frost was next with 86 percent; Minnehaha, 85; Clover Lick, 83.5; Green Bank, 82.4; Lobelia and Droop, 82; Hillsboro, 81.9; Mill Point, 81.6; Dunmore, 81.2; Huntersville and Buckeye, 80 percent.
Forest Fires
As of Tuesday afternoon the only fire the past week in Pocahontas County was a fire which broke out Friday on the Cal Price State Forest; about 70 acres burned before it was brought under control. It was still being patrolled Tuesday.
The heavy overcast of smoke has been coming from the big number of fires farther south in the state. This has created a problem for the men in the fire towers since it cuts down the visibility to a few miles. James Schaffner says that local people can be a big help in reporting local burnings promptly since the lookouts are hindered by the poor visibility.
Mr. Schaffner reports it has been 25 days since we had any measurable rain and it is a critical situation.
Football
Marlinton closed its football season with an impressive victory over Rainelle Saturday, 32 -13. It was announced Tuesday that Marlinton ranks third in State Class A ratings.
BIRTH
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jones, Jr., of Hyattsville, Maryland, a son, named James Cary. The mother is the former Frances Dulaney, of Marlinton.
DEATHS
Manuel H. Seagraves, 63, of Marlinton; survived by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Yeager Seagraves…; burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Josietta Adair Sage Moore, 22, of Cleveland, Ohio, from complications following childbirth; survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sage, of Slatyfork; husband, Harry Peyton Moore; twin daughters, Carrie and Sherrie, and a newborn son. Burial in the family cemetery on Elk.
Louis Otto Shields, 70, of Stony Bottom; a retired farmer and lumberman, he was a member of the Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church of Stony Bottom where he served as elder and superintendent of the Sunday School. Burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.
Charles H. Craddock, aged 74, six months and 13 days; son of the late Cephas and Ellen Craddock. He was a devoted husband and father and was liked by all who knew him. Burial in the Sharp Cemetery at Slatyfork.
The Rev. Denver Lively attended the funeral of Johnny Ray Lively, 5 year old son of his nephew, who drowned in the Kanawha River near Belle.
