Alfred George Dean, Jr., age 83, of Marlinton, passed away Monday, April 2, 2018, at Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea.
Born July 23, 1934, at Marlinton, he was a son of the late Alfred George Dean, Sr. and Ina Smith Dean.
Upon graduating from Marlinton High School in 1956, Alfred served in the United States Army until 1959. He then worked at Dean’s Hardware Store in Mill Point, where he met his wife, Janet Rose Dean, whom he married February 5, 1960.
From 1963 to 1967, he was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways. He worked as Park Superintendent at Canaan Valley from 1967 to 1972, and then accepted the position of Golf Superintendent at Cacapon State Park in Berkeley Springs, continuing to work there for 10 years. In 1982, Alfred became Park Superintendent at Valley Falls State Park in Fairmont. From 1995 until his retirement in 1997, he worked at Kumbrabow State Forest in Randolph County.
Since retiring, Alfred has actively worked with the Watoga State Park Foundation and served on the Pocahontas County Democratic Executive Committee. He was of the Methodist faith and had a passion for gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet Rose Dean; a daughter, Dana Elizabeth Wentland, of Dover, Delaware; three sons, Bradley Steven Dean, of Marlinton, Jeffrey Allen Dean, of Orlando, Florida, and Dewayne Christopher Dean, of Heidelberg, Germany; two sisters, Grace Combs, of Huntington, and Gay Fields, of New Cumberland, Maryland; a brother, Elmer Dean, of Marlinton; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth Wentland, Jermaine Dean, Justin Dean, Austin Dean and Amber Dean.
Funeral service was held April 6 at Kimble Funeral Home in Marlinton with Pastor Jim Murphy officiating. Interment was in the Beaver Creek Cemetery with Military Rites by the Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps.
