The rains and warm weather swelled the rivers and creeks and took the ice out for the third time last Saturday.
Boys and Girls in Service
Private Harry J. Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward R. Kelley, of Huntersville, enlisted in the U. S. Army January 8. He left the 9th for Beckley to take his examination, and from there he went to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he is doing his basic training.
Roy Beverage has completed three years’ service in the Navy and was separated from the Service last Friday at Norfolk.
J. R. Dunbrack has enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He is now at Camp Moffett, Waukegan, Illinois, for processing from where he will go to San Diego, California.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Marlinton Fire Department has selected the following officers for the coming year; Chief – Fred Burns, Jr.; Assistant Chief – Kenneth Faulknier; Captain – Kyle McCarty; First Lieutenant – Tony Ricottilli; Second Lieutenant – Don Rogers; Sergeant at Arms – Tom Campbell; President – Wayne Ware; Vice President – Paul Gladwell; Secretary – Harper Nelson; Treasurer – Ed Stemple; Chaplain – Rev. Peirce; Executive Committee – Reed Wilfong, Eugene Underwood.
They report 116 ambulance runs and 33 fires for the year.
This is the highest number of fires on record and second highest number of ambulance runs on record. A member of the Fire Department says the odd years seem to run higher.
BIRTHS
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Danny Doss, of Marlinton, a daughter, named Mary Ann Elizabeth.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Roberts, of Hillsboro, a son.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stemple, of Marlinton, a daughter.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Dean, of Beard, a daughter.
DEATHS
Thomas Rush McNeill, age 83, of Buckeye; a son of the late Matthew (Dock) Wallace and Martha Ann Perkins McNeill.
Jesse Thomas Cassell, age 70, of Cass; a son of the late Thomas and Littie Galford Cassell; a lifelong resident of Cass; burial in the Wanless Cemetery.
Mrs. Elizabeth Williams Lohr, age 56, of Staunton, Virginia, was killed instantly when struck by a truck. She was walking to meet a ride to work, wearing a dark raincoat and was unseen in a driving rainstorm before full daylight. Burial near Fisherville, Virginia. Mrs. E. H. Williams, Callis Hoover and Fred Burns attended the funeral of Mrs. Williams’ niece, Elizabeth Lohr.
Daniel H. Carpenter, age 66, was found frozen to death last Thursday near Spruce Flats. He was last seen Monday night, January 20, 1964, after he left a taxi that could not proceed farther up the mountain to his home because of blizzard conditions. He was a son of the late John Wesley and Mary Harsh Carpenter; burial in the Cloonan Cemetery at Buckeye.
Clarence Tyree, age 67, of Buckeye, died in Columbia, South Carolina; death was attributed to emphysema. Born at Millboro Springs, he was a son of the late James Lee and Margaret O’Brien Tryee; a member of the Presbyterian Church; burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
Howard Letcher Chestnut, age 34, of Troutville, Virginia, was killed Saturday when a car fell on him as he was working underneath. Born at Mountain Grove, Virginia, he was the son of Edward J. and Mabel Trainer Chestnut. Burial in the family cemetery on Little Back Creek.
Mrs. Laura Bessie Bird, age 83, of Mill Gap, Virginia; a daughter of the late George and Eliza Jane Rock Scruggs; burial in the Green Hill Church Cemetery.
Denleigh M. Collins, age 57, of Madison, Wisconsin; the youngest of nine children of the late Peter and Sally Bagby Collins, on Knapps Creek, near Minnehaha Springs.
