Author and artist Deborah Clearman will read excerpts from her newly published book Concepcion and the Baby Brokers and Other Stories out of Guatemala, Thursday, May 18, at 7 p.m. at the McClintic Public Library in Marlinton.
Clearman, a noted painter represented by First Street Gallery in New York City, has also made a name for herself as an author. She wrote and illustrated The Goose’s Tale for children and her first novel, Todos Santos, was published in 2010. She has also been published in numerous literary journals.
Dividing her time between New York and Guatemala, Clearman maintains a close connection to the people and culture of Guatemala.
Her latest publication is a collection of nine stories based largely in Guatemala.
The stories touch on emotional and thought-provoking issues including international adoption, drug trafficking and immigration.
Clearman is currently holding book readings around the United States and is making a stop in Pocahontas County due in part to the fact her brother, Doug Chadwick, is a Hillsboro-based professional photographer.
The event is free to the public and is sponsored by the Hillsboro Book Club.
