An Ounce of Prevention

‘Something Better To Do!’

January is a special month that provides the opportunity to start a new year with goals to improve various areas of our lives.

The Pocahontas County Prevention Coalition wants to offer our youth “Something Better To Do!”

Through a grant, awarded by Snowshoe Foundation, the coalition has planned a fun activity for each month in 2017.

Most of the activities encourage family participation. The science of substance abuse prevention tells us that youth who are involved in substance free activities, have good attendance and participation in school, have friends that disapprove of alcohol and other drug use, have parents who set clear expectations and are involved in family life, and have a connection with their communities are at a much lower risk for experimenting with drug use.

“Be Smart Don’t Start” is more than a slogan it’s the reality that prevention is key in stopping the drug epidemic.

“Something Better To Do!” will have its first activity Friday, January 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pocahontas County Career Center. The movie “The Secret Life of Pets” will be shown and refreshments will be provided. School age children and their families are invited to attend. An adult must be present to sign students in and out. Children in grades five and lower will need to have an adult stay with them for the movie. Youth and teens in sixth grade and up may stay without an adult.

Future activities being planned include a Corn Hole Tournament, end of school Carnival, and a Zombie 5k run.

We hope you join us Friday for “Something Better To Do!”
