Monongahela National Forest
While deer hunting on the Greenbrier District of the Monongahela National Forest, 23 year old Ray McCulloch, of Dayton, Ohio, was separated from his hunting party at the head of Span Oak Run, a tributary of Little River of the West Fork of Greenbrier River. After McCulloch failed to rejoin his group, the District Forest Ranger of Bartow, Edward Vinoski, was notified. A search and rescue team was immediately organized. It consisted of Deputy Sheriff Ted Matheny; Conservation Officer Elmer White; Wild-life Manager Roscoe Booth; and five Forest Service employees, led by Ranger Vinoski. The search began on the Elk Lick Trail at 10 p.m. After one hour of tracking the hunter, it was evident that McCulloch was heading directly toward a search party stationed on Little River Road at the mouth of Span Oak Run.
At 1:00 a.m. December 1, McCulloch, cold, tired, limping and wet, reached the waiting vehicle on the Little River Road after traveling nearly five miles through foot deep snow and below freezing temperatures. He had chopped up his rifle stock to build a fire, but was unable to keep the fire burning so he decided to try walking out.
