Snakes
Origen Underwood and his son-in-law, A. G. Dean, were in from Beaver Creek Monday. One of his cows had been bitten by a snake a few days ago. When they were checking a field to see if the grass was doing any good, they saw a big rattler lying partly under a root of an old tree. Dean went back to the house for a gun and killed it, looked around, found another one, and killed it also. They turned over the old root and there was a copperhead so they killed it. The rattlers were about 40 inches long and the copperhead about two feet.
Little League
The Marlinton Little League teams have elected their Kings and Queens for the parade and annual mothers’ softball games at the Marlinton High School Field on Sunday, July 17, at 1:00 p.m. The kings and queens are as follows:
Yanks – Kathy Johnson, the daughter of Mr. and Ms. Billy Joe Johnson, of Denmar. She is 10 years old and in the 5th grade at Hillsboro School.
Frank Morrison, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Morrison, of Marlinton. He is 10 years old and in the 5th grade at Marlinton Graded School.
Cubs – Lori Rose, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Rose, of Hillsboro. She is 11 years old and in the 7th grade at Hillsboro School.
Donald Moore is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moore, of Buckeye. He is 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Hillsboro School.
Cards – Wendy Wooddell, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Wooddell, of Marlinton. She is 10 years old and in the 4th grade at Marlinton Grade School.
Robert Long, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Long, of Buckeye. He is 10 years old and in the 5th grade at Marlinton Graded School.
Giants – Cornell “Susie” Moore, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Moore, of Marlinton. She is 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Marlinton Junior High School.
David Cain, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edsel Cain, of Marlinton. He is 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Marlinton Junior High School.
The parade will start at Brill’s Esso Station and continue through town to the football field. The queens will be crowned and then the softball game will be played.
CASS TRAIN
Last week was a big week for the Cass Train, with 3,134 riders. Total now is 10,501.
New Superintendent
Grey Cassell is our new Superintendent of Schools. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Cassell, of Cass. He received his college and graduate training at William and Mary College. His wife is the former Mary Catherine Handy, of Virginia Beach, and they have one son, Grey Monroe, Jr., age one year.
Dean of Women
Mrs. Julia Pitsenberger, formerly of Marlinton, has been named Dean of Women at Alderson-Broadus College. Mrs. Pitsenberger received her B. S. Degree in home economics and her M.A. Degree in guidance and counseling from West Virginia University.
Boys and Girls in Service
Specialist 4 Wilburn E. Walton, of Hillsboro, has successfully completed two weeks non-commissioned officers’ school at the First N.C.O. School West Virginia Military Academy at Camp Dawson. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Walton, of Huntersville.
Army Sgt. Clyde B. Jackson, 23, son of William E. Jackson, of Marlinton, completed a drill sergeant course at the Third Army Non-commissioned Officer Academy, Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Pvt. Dwight B. Kinnison, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil S. Kinnison, Hillsboro, completed a lineman’s course at the Army Southeastern Signal School, Fort Gordon, Georgia.
WEDDING
Miss Linda Reynolds and Jarrell Clifton were united in marriage on Thursday, June 30, 1966, at the Edray Methodist Parsonage. The single ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Harry Drake.
BIRTHS
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Friel, of Marlinton, a son, named Stanley Dale.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Kelley Mason, of Sacramento, California, a daughter, named Kelli Kristine.
DEATHS
Wade Adkinson Morris, 79, of Cass; burial in the Wanless Cemetery.
Mrs. Zadie Withrow Small, 82, of Renick; a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Withrow. Burial in the Old Droop Cemetery near Beard.
Russell O. Crowley, 79, of Green Bank; a son of the late Cain and Esta Crowley. Burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.
Lawrence Willard Meadows, 51, of Beckley, died Thursday in the Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. He suffered a heart attack while passing through Marlinton.
