At the West Virginia Lions Club International convention last weekend, Durbin Lion and Past District Governor-29N Charles Sheets was surprised with one of the most prestigious awards given to a Lion – the International President’s Award.

LCI President Dr. Jitsuhro Yamada recognized Sheets for his work as District Governor in 2014-2015. During his time as DG, Sheets worked with clubs in his district to improve membership and recognized club members who have been Lions for more than 50 years.

Along with serving his district, Sheets has served his home club since he joined Durbin Lions in 1999 and has served as club president. He is a current member of the board of directors and is a Melvin Jones Fellow.

At the award ceremony, Past International Director Steve Glass explained why Sheets was selected to receive the award.

“Lion Sheets served as District Governor of former District 29-N in 2014-2015,” Glass said. “During the redistricting that took place during last year, Lion Sheets worked diligently to have a smooth and conflict-free transition to the newly constitute District 29-C. He demonstrated strong and consistent leadership during this transition.”

Glass added that Sheets worked with individual clubs to reorganize and retain members.

“[He] was the guiding force behind reorganizing the Montgomery Lions Club in District 29-C during the last two months of his tenure as District Governor, resulting in the growth of the club by eighteen members,” Glass said. “His leadership and determination resulted in saving this club. He also organized a reorganization effort for the Beckley Lions Club. His direct efforts has resulted in District 29-C being in a positive growth status at this point in the year.”

Sheets received a plaque and a letter from LCI President Yamada.

In the letter, Yamada thanked Sheets for his service as a Lion.

“Your hard work and compassion serve as an example to the Lions, your community and the world around you,” Yamada wrote. “It is encouraging to know that Lions like you work together to foster peace and harmony, giving hope to all people and giving others the opportunity to live with dignity.”

In closing, Yamada encouraged Sheets to continue his service to the international community all Lions serve.

“I would like to express my personal gratitude for your efforts and accomplishments,” Yamada wrote. “I know you will continue to enrich the lives of your fellow club members and others, and to provide even greater humanitarian service.”
