Newman Dale Fertig, age 103, a longtime resident of Belington, departed this life Friday, March 11, 2016, at his home. He had been in usual health, and death was unexpected.
Born January 17, 1913, at Marlinton, he was a son of the late Newman and Nola Sharp Fertig.
Newman was a graduate of Marlinton High School. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served during World War II and Company B 35th Signal Light Construction Battalion. He was employed by the Great American Tea Company in sales, then as route manager and lastly as assistant manager. For many years, he was owner and operator of Fertig Coffee Sales from which he retired.
On June 21, 1940, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, he married Mildred Geneva Quick, who preceded him in death February 6, 1995.
He was a lifetime member of the Laurel Mountain Post 410 VFW in Belington. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters; a son-in-law, Butch Farley; and a great-grandchild. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by a son, Newman Elliott “Butch” Fertig, and wife, Barbara, of Terra Alta; two daughters, Sharon Dale Toth, and husband, Ruby, and Michele F. “Mike” Farley, all of Belington; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Per his request, the body will be cremated and interred with Military Rites in the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton.
