NEW HOPE LUTHERAN 100TH ANNIVERSARY

New Hope Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Springs will celebrate its 100th anniversary August 22, 1976 with at service at 3 p.m.

In the summer of 1876, Henry White and his wife, Sabina, with their family, came to Pocahontas County. They were the first Lutherans in this section of the country. Occasionally, services by Lutheran pastors were held in homes, schoolhouses and nearby churches until the present building was erected and dedicated in 1893.

THE YEARS OF RETIREMENT

By Annie L. Cromer

If you are one who is afraid of or dreads the time when you must retire from the job you are doing, don’t fret, but prepare yourself for the time of your life. To me, retirement means being able to do the things you want to do and not the things you have to do.

When we bought another farm after we left the jobs we were working on, several people remarked, “Are you crazy? Why don’t you sit down and take life easy? You are not getting any younger, you know.”

I answered, “True, we are working harder than ever, but no one is telling us we must.” Besides, no one is giving us a warning stare if we go to work late or quit early. Did you ever notice for everyone who tries to put you down, there is one to encourage you rather unexpectedly? I like Leonard Curry. With his arm around my shoulder, said, “Annie, I have always admired you and Harvey for the way you have always kept busy at one thing and then another.”

Isn’t it wonderful how simple, but well-meant words can strengthen us for the years to come?

We know we are not getting younger or are as young as we used to be, but who is – I know no one.

The late John Hevener used to say,” Work every day like you will live to be 100, but live every day as if you will die tomorrow”

I like to practice that.
