It was a grand old day at Green Bank Elementary-Middle School November 10 as the school celebrated with grandparents and “grandfriends” with an art show and musical entertainment.
Family Involvement Committee member Lucy Rittenhouse explained that the school is always putting on programs for parents and decided to recognize the grandparents for all the support they give the students.
“It occurred to us that grandparents play a huge role,” Rittenhouse said. “Today, we’re honoring grandparents and, we also say grandfriends – those are our friends and neighbors in the community who sometimes play that role as a grandparent.”
Grandparents/friends were treated to homemade snacks provided by the staff as they enjoyed a gallery of students’ artwork, as well as a concert provided by Juanita Fireball and the Continental Drifters.
“Alison [Flegel] wanted an opportunity to have an atmosphere where she could do an art show, so we worked together on this event,” Rittenhouse said. “She does a tremendous job. She has a work of art from every student.”
During the concert, Juanita Fireball, AKA Mike Burns, led the students in a friendly contest to see which section of the audience had the best dancers. The grandparents voted by applause and it seems everyone came out a winner in the end.
