We don’t write obituaries as they used to. Here is an interesting sample from an old Pocahontas Times.
Charles Rufus Robertson – Dead
After an illness of more than a month, Mr. Rufus Robertson died last Sunday morning of heart disease at his home on Crab Run, aged 46 years. For several years he had not enjoyed good health and there were many times when his sickness prevented him from providing for his large family, consisting of his wife and eight children, consequently they are left in straightened circumstances. In this country of plenty, if would be well for those who are blessed with a goodly share to remember with a portion of their goods this widow in her distress and these fatherless children. We have an idea that it is not enough for Christians in their prayers to make the simple request that God take care of the widows and orphans. Aside from this petition a personal obligation remains to be discharged.
On Monday, the remains of the deceased were interred in the Beverage Graveyard on Strait Creek, Rev. Josiah Beverage officiating.
Mr. Robertson was a son of Jack Robertson who, it will be remembered by many of our older readers, was a Confederate soldier who was shot during the Civil War for overstaying two days over the time of his furlough.
He had been granted leave to visit his family who were stricken with illness; winter storms prevented his return to duty at the designated time, as told to Joy Hinkle by her father, William Lee Hinkle.

TREE TO ROSE BOWL
A Pocahontas County tree is going to the Rose Bowl Parade. The Marlinton Ran-ger District of the Monongahela National Forest was chosen to send a ten-foot peeled section of Yellow Poplar bark to California for the annual Rose Bowl Parade. The bark will be reconstructed into a tree and will be one of ten different species of trees on a float titled, “Let’s Celebrate 111 Years of American Forestry.” The float is sponsored by the city of Terrance, California, in cooperation with the U. S. Forest Service National Media Office. The Eastern Regions of the National Forest System will be sending bark from two other species of trees, Sugar Maple and White Birch. The other seven species will be collected from National Forests from each of the other eight regions.
The Yellow Poplar bark is from a tree on Brushy Mountain in Pocahontas County.
