Mark Allen Williamson, formerly of Pocahontas County, unexpectedly passed away of natural causes Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at his home in Bruceton Mills.
Born in Morgantown, October 2, 1964, Mark’s genuine spirit and joyous heart touched countless lives throughout his 60 years.
Mark graduated from University High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Fairmont State University. His dedication to public service was evident through his 30-year tenure with the West Virginia Division of Corrections, from which he retired as the Warden of Denmar Correctional Center.
Throughout his youth, Mark was an exceptional athlete, displaying a natural talent in various sports. His passion for the outdoors was apparent to anyone who knew him, as he cherished hunting, fishing and riding his side-by-side at camp. He conveyed his love for sports by inspiring young athletes as a coach, achieving several county championships with his football and baseball teams. His greatest joy, however, was spending precious time with his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Mark was renowned for his wit and sense of humor. Sarcasm was his trademark among family and friends, with whom he shared many inside jokes. Those who knew Mark knew the genuine warmth of his pleasant spirit. He savored good food and good music, and treasured the company of good friends.
Reflecting on Mark’s life, one is reminded of the words of the great Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children… to leave the world a bit better… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Mark certainly succeeded in this and so much more.
Mark Allen Williamson’s journey on earth came to a close in the same state where it began. Yet, his essence, his laughter, and the profound impact he had on those around him are immortal. In our hearts and memories, Mark will forever be remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest and left a lasting imprint on the world. He will be deeply missed, but the legacy of his kindness, humor, and love will endure through generations.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Roy Allen and Edwina Lee Matthews Williamson; his cherished infant granddaughter, Isabelle; and both his maternal and paternal grandparents, Edwin and Grace Matthews, and Kenneth Eugene and Elva Williamson.
Mark’s memory will live on through his beloved wife, Angelena; his dedicated children, Morgan Brackenridge, and husband, Nathan, Mark A. Williamson, II, and wife, Angela Nicole, and step-son, Lucas Ryder, and wife Kayla. His sisters, Debra (Joseph) Saunders, Donna Williamson and Traci Aberegg; brother, Michael Bierer; and sister-in-law, Jane Jackson; will forever hold Mark in their hearts. Mark’s legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Ava, Benjamin, Carrie, Mylee, Kolton and Easton; and he will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephew, Stefanie (Damon) Rutschilling, Ross (Leah) Slovak and Lindsey Aberegg; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Following the gathering, Mark’s request for cremation was honored by his family.
A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
