
The annual 4-H and FFA Ham, Bacon and Egg Snow and Sale took place Saturday, March 22, at the Pocahontas County Opera House. Forty-five county youth (35 4-Hers, eight FFA members, and two 4-H/FFA) showcased their many hours of hard work as they exhibited and sold 43 hams, 42 bacons and 16 dozen eggs they produced as their projects in 4-H and FFA. Support from businesses in and out of the county created a sales volume of $58,502.

Victor Dean exhibited the Grand Champion Ham which weighed 26.78 lbs. Dominion Energy purchased the ham for $1687.14.

The Reserve Champion Ham, shown by Owen Sattler, weighed 24 pounds and was sold to Southern States for $1320.

Natalie Irvine exhibited the Grand Champion Bacon which weighed 7.56 pounds and was purchased by Mitchell Chevrolet for $1134.

The Reserve Champion Bacon was exhibited by Owen Sattler and weighed 7.12 pounds and sold for $2,207.20 to Timber Crest.

The Grand Champion Eggs, shown by Kylor Brock ,sold for $550 to Appalachian Sport.


Leanne Green’s Reserve Champion Eggs were purchased by Owens Repair Services for $500. They also purchased the PCHS FFA Scholarship Ham weighing 18.76 pounds for $2,251.20.

Southern States gave the winning bid of $1,250 for a handmade wooden FFA plaque donated by Denmar Correctional Facility.
In addition to the Grand and Reserve Champions and the scholarship ham, bidders attending the auction had a chance to buy 10 Prime hams, 15 Choice hams, 15 Good hams, eight Prime bacons, 15 Choice bacons, 17 Good bacons, four Grade AA eggs, five Grade A eggs, and five Grade B eggs.
Four-H members selling these products included Grayson Barlow, Garrett Bauserman, Ezra Bond, Kylor Brock, Madalynn Brock, Trenton Brock, Makiya Burns, Ryan Burns, Noah Clifton, Silas Dean, Victor Dean, Layne Dunbrack, Elizabeth Friel, Michael Friel, Tyler Friel, Leanne Green, Riley Hamons, Sienna Hamons, Levi Hill, RT Hill, Natalie Irvine, Owen Sattler, Trey Sattler, Sullivan Seldomridge, Evan Sharp, Noah Sharp, Natalie Sisler, Abigail Taylor, Coleton Taylor, Kelsi Taylor, Luke Taylor, Lydia Taylor, Macaden Taylor, Cade Wagner and Lane Wilfong. FFA members selling products were Caroline Bennett, Brianna Cochran, Amber Defibaugh (4-H/FFA), Kirsten Friel (4-H/FFA), Mallori McCoy, Sierra Nelson, Dixie Schoolcraft, Naveah Southern, Griffen Taylor and Cammi Warner.

Kalab Hughart and Ben Wilfong served as Auctioneers and Brian Wickline and Josh Peplowski were the Show Judges. Pocahontas IGA provided free slicing and bags for the sale. City National Bank, Pocahontas Memorial Hospital, Gibson’s Feed & Grain, Ben Wilfong and DC Designs provided donations for project premiums to be divided equally among all participants. Brushy Flat Bushwackers 4-H Club provided refreshments for the event in addition to ham biscuits prepared by 4-H Agent Luci Mosesso. The 4-H and FFA members appreciate the continued support of the community.
