The Women’s Club held its annual picnic at the Fairgrounds Saturday evening. The men folks were invited in, and the brutes were fed up a plenty. A fine and remarkable thing about it was the barring of all speeches. The fall air was bracing, and a glorious campfire was lighted.

The six-year-old son of Forrest Griffin at Clover Lick climbed on a box car standing on the siding at Raines Sawmill Tuesday morning and fell from the roof to the track. He suffered a fontal fracture of the skull and a broken arm and is in critical condition.

FOOTBALL

Hillsboro High School and Edray District Hight School played rugby football at the Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon. It was a fine game, closely contested by two well matched teams; though Marlinton won by a score of 34 to 0. A big and enthusiastic crowd witnessed the game.

PRISONERS BREAK FROM JAIL

Jim Asten, Earl Lay and William Fitzpatrick, prisoners who were sentenced at the recent term of the Circuit Court, broke jail Monday night. As this paper is printed, they are still at large. The prisoners had been taken to the Cass jail to be held until Asten and Lay could be taken to the penitentiary and Fitzpatrick to the Elkins jail.

When the County jail at Marlinton was taken down last summer to be replaced by a new structure, the town of Cass bought the steel cells. A new jail was built at Cass and fitted up with these cells. In some way, the prisoners got a file or saw and cut their way to liberty. Anthony Simmons, another prisoner, refused to run away.

Jim Asten is a Cherokee Indian, half breed. He was given a 10-year sentence at the recent term of Court for burglary and making moonshine. Five or six years ago, he was sent to the penitentiary for burglary. While on the road gang, he broke away and was in the woods around Marlinton for several months. About two months ago, he helped rob Coyner Brothers store at Clover Lick and since then he had been in the woods around the town. The other day, he sought shelter from the rain in his mother’s home, and he was arrested by State Trooper Tidd.

Lay is under a three-year sentence for helping Asten in the Clover Lick robbery.

Fitzpatrick was given six months in jail for an attempt to kill.
