A big forest fire in the West Union neighborhood Sunday did great damage. A lot of fence was burned and it was with difficulty that fire was kept from buildings and cornfields. It was four o’clock Monday morning before the fire was under control. The leaves were dry and loose, and a heavy wind was blowing.
HOTEL OPEN
The Marlin-Sewell Hotel was opened last Friday night in style. About 130 were served a fine supper. The military orchestra from the G. M. S. at Lewisburg played fine music.
The new hotel has a remarkable plant. There are 36 bedrooms. All new and nicely furnished. The manager is Col. H. M. Lockridge. He has a reputation as a host, having been in charge of the clubhouse at Minnehaha Springs since its opening.

KIWANIS
The recently organized Marlinton Kiwanis Club held its first luncheon Thursday evening at the new Marlinton Sewell Hotel. There were twenty-seven Kiwanis present, and a most delightful meal was served.
The Kiwanis is a luncheon club that meets once a week for one hour, no more, no less.
The membership consists of not more than two men of the same profession or calling, and not more than one man from the same firm or corporation. The Marlinton membership is now 38. Of these, 27 were at the luncheon last Thursday.
No one knows what the word Kiwanis means. Some think it is a Sioux Indian word. The motto is “We Build.” This covers a wide general field…
