After the cancellation of the second Middle School Football game against Tucker County, the young Pocahontas County Warriors were left frustrated and thirsty for the smell of grass on their body and the feeling of red in their palms. They did not waver their practices one bit, though, and, fortunately, they did not have to wait too long for the day of the game to come. Although losing 28 – 6, each and every one of the young Warriors had an absolute blast of a time at Cosgray Field in Hundred, deep in the center of the Hornets’ Nest this past Saturday. This time their opponent was the Longdrain Hornets.
On the very first play of the game, #7 of the Hornets would catch a pass and run the ball 50-yards for a touchdown and the two-point conversion was good, starting the game at 8 – 0. The young Warriors, however, retaliated with a touchdown of their own made by sixth-grader, #36, Waylon Burdette, but the kick for the extra point was no good. Then, in the second quarter, eighth-grader, #50, Mitchell Koerber, recovered the ball on defense after disrupting the quarterback and lineman’s reactions, giving the ball back to the Warriors in Hornet territory. However, the Warriors would fail to capitalize on the fumble and, on their next possession, Long-drain would score another touchdown.
The score remained at 14-6 throughout most of the game until the fourth quarter when the Hornets would rattle off two quick touchdowns.
The young Middle School Warriors have a short week as they face Pendleton at Warrior Field Wednesday, September 25, at 6:30 p.m.
