Going into week 8, the Pocahontas County Middle School Football Team was looking for a big win for its final home game of the season. It would have been a great way to celebrate Eighth Grade Night in front of the home crowd.
The Young Warriors were not so lucky, as they fell to the Petersburg Middle School Vikings by a score of 40-8.
The Vikings came in strong and fast with a heavy pass game that the Warriors could not answer. The Warrior defense was steadfast as eighth grader, #5 Liam Burdette would intercept the Vikings two times, however, the offense was never able to convert those into points on the scoreboard.
In the final seconds of the game, eighth grader, #45 Noah Foe had an extraordinary run of 40-yards for the only Warrior touchdown of the night, with a successful two-point conversion. After the game, Coach Graae told the players, “Petersburg is a good team, and you all fought hard on Eighth Grade Night. It just wasn’t our night tonight.”
Eighth Grade Night was a great success in other ways as Green Bank Middle School and Marlinton Middle School bands came together to play at the game. Pocahontas County High School Football coaches were also in attendance to show their support for their upcoming players. The Young Warriors were also supported by the PCHS Cheerleaders as they were there to form the opening tunnel and cheered for the first portion of the game. Eighth graders were joined by parents and relatives for their Eighth Grade Walk and received gifts at their final home game as middle school athletes.
The Middle School Warriors will travel to Clay Battelle Middle School Cee Bees Thursday, October 24. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.
The stadium is located at 6226 Mason-Dixon Highway in Blacksville, WV.
