William R. “Bill” Shelton, age 83, of Huntersville, peacefully passed away at his home Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
Born July 3, 1941, he was a son of the late Arthur Roscoe and Stella Grace McLaughlin Shelton.
Bill graduated from Marlinton High School in 1960 and spent most of his life working as a heavy equipment mechanic. He was a 49-year member and past Master of the Huntersville Masonic Lodge #65, A.F.&A.M.
Bill truly enjoyed his work as a heavy equipment mechanic because it gave him the opportunity to meet and talk to people, which was one of his favorite things. After retirement, Bill continued to work part-time for Mitchell Chevrolet and as a part-time Green Box and Scale House Attendant for the Pocahontas County Solid Waste Authority so he could continue to do what he enjoyed most – bring a smile to other people’s faces. He always had a joke or a story to tell to make people laugh and never met a stranger.
He had a heart of gold, and he was always willing to step in and help whenever it was needed. He continued to support the Huntersville United Methodist Church with its annual Christmas fruit gift baskets and was considered an overall valued member of the community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Hilda Loraine Fitzgerald Shelton; his beloved daughter, Rebecca Sue Shelton; and his brother, John Howard Shelton.
He is survived by two sons, William “Rex” Shelton II, of Huntersville, and Robert “Bobby” Shelton, of Morgantown; granddaughter, Ariana Grace Shelton, of Hot Springs, Virginia; two sisters, Elizabeth Hodges, of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Marsha Perlingiero, of Seymour, Tennessee; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a multitude of friends, who have nothing but kind words to say and fond memories to share.
The family will receive friends Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home in Marlinton. The visitation will be followed by a short service at 3 p.m. officiated by Pastor Sam Felton.
