Thomas Alex “Tom” Lane, 75, of Marlinton, departed this life Friday, September 5, 2025, for his heavenly home from the ICU Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia. He had been a resident of Pocahontas Center for the past 14 months.

Born January 30, 1950, in Marlinton, he was a son of the late Alex and Louise Cochran Lane.

Tom graduated from Marlinton High School in 1968. He played on the Marlinton Copperhead team that won the 1967 West Virginia State Football Championship. He attended West Virginia Tech and graduated with a degree in Business Management.

In 1973, Tom moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he was employed with Chevron Oil Company, but he missed the hills of West Virginia, so he moved back to Marlinton and began employment with Virginia Electric Power Company in Mountain Grove, Virginia. In 1997, Tom accepted a position of Deputy Assessor for Pocahontas County working with Dolan Irvine. Tom was elected Pocahontas Assessor in 2012 and retired in 2020.

In 1972, he married the love of his life, Mariam Rachel Slaven Lane. They celebrated 52 years together.

He loved to hunt and fish and to be outdoors. He also loved watching the WVU Mountaineers, his favorite football team. Tom, Rachel, his brothers and nephews hunted deer every fall.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only child, a son, Jason Thomas Lane.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel; granddaughter, Alexandria Lane; brothers, Delmas Lane and Steven Lane, and wife, Linda; sisters, Phyllis Clarkson, and husband, Bill, and Betty Thompson; and many nephews and nieces.

Tom was a kind, caring person. He loved all small animals and adopted many that crossed his path. He remained close to his mother and father and brothers and sisters all his life. They all loved him so very much.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Lantz Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Felton officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.
