Rivals Marlinton Middle School Copperheads and Green Bank Middle School Eagles met for a basketball show- down at Pocahontas County High School February 14 during the 2019 Pocahontas County Basketball Tournament.
In the first game, the Lady Copperheads took an early lead and dominated the first half of the game. At halftime, the score was 15 to 2. During the third quarter, the Lady Eagles began to close the gap and in the last few minutes of the match, Green Bank overtook the Lady Copperheads and went on to win the game 25 to 22.
Next to hit the court were the boys teams. The score was close throughout the entire game with the Eagles leading, at most, by eight points during the third quarter. Marlinton Middle School played aggressively but were unable to overcome the Eagles. The final score was 40 to 34.
Players recognized as part of the All-Tournament Team included Green Bank team members Sara Maxwell, Emma Riffe, Kelsi Taylor, Austin Morgan, Nacota Smith and Connor Taylor; and Marlinton team members Mackenzie Meyers, Haley Spencer, Braedan Hayhurst and Dillon Dunz.
Cheerleaders recognized as part of the All-Tournament Team included Green Bank team members Jaclyn Osborne and Summer War-ner; and Marlinton team members Pyper Cowan and Hayley Kincaid.
When asked about being recognized as part of the All-Tournament Team, eighth-grade Eagles player Austin Morgan said, “It felt good to win because I played hard all year and helped the team and advanced as a player myself.”
Student athletes were also recognized for their academic achievement.
Green Bank was presented with the GPA award for both the girls’ and boys’ teams, alongside Marlinton Middle School’s cheerleaders.
