Roger C. McLaughlin, age 68, of Marlinton, passed from this earthly plane to his heavenly home Tuesday, September 26, 2023.
Born November 18, 1954, in Marlinton, he was a son of the late Robert M. McLaughlin, Sr. and Dorothy Marie Hansford.
Roger grew up on the McLaughlin family farm located on Knapps Creek in Pocahontas County. He loved living the farm life and he shared the love of horsemanship from his father, Robert. He also developed a strong work ethic from his grandfather, Elmer. He graduated from Pocahontas County High School in 1972 and then enlisted in the US Navy. He served from 1972-1975, during the end of the Vietnam Conflict.
Roger worked various jobs throughout his life, but he found his niche as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the IUOE, Local 132, from which he retired. He owned and operated a small excavating business in Pocahontas County and, while technically retired, he worked seasonally for a local contractor.
Roger was an avid hunter and especially loved deer hunting. He also had a love of motorcycling, and riding his Harley Davidson Road King was a passion. He and his wife enjoyed attending Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Florida, as often as they could. Roger cherished his children and especially loved sharing time with his grandson, Liam. As we all know, Roger was an avid conversationalist. He never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Robert M. McLaughlin Jr.
Roger is survived by his wife of 37 years, Leslie A. Kilmer McLaughlin; sons Troy Lynn (wife Jenny), and Wesley Robert (partner, Caitlin); grandson, Liam Antonio; sister Edmonia M. McLaughlin (friend, Bernie); younger brother, Darren Galford; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, October 7, 2023, at New Hope Church of the Brethren in Dunmore, with Rev. Julian Rittenhouse officiating. Military Rites will follow.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service.
Following the service, family and friends are invited to Wesley’s home for a Celebration of a Life event in honor of Roger.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Marlinton Fire and Rescue or the Frost Fire Department.
