Richard Grant Bird, 88, of Marlinton, departed from this life Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in Buckeye, surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 3, 1935, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Wilford G. Bird and Wava Evelyn Skeen Bird.
He was treasured as a loving and faithful husband to Julia Tyler Bird for 45 years, a compassionate father and grandfather, a good friend and teacher, and a Christian. Mr. Bird was an avid outdoorsman who was deeply attached to his farm. He was a martial arts expert and an individual who valued lifelong learning.
Mr. Bird was a graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology and a U.S. Army veteran who served in Korea. Professionally, he began designing information architecture systems when compu- ters were in their infancy and took on roles of increasing responsibility. His last position was senior systems engineering analyst with Dominion Energy working on the Bath County Pumped Storage Station.
On June 2, 1979, he married Julia Tyler Bird, who survives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Bird; and great-grandson, Jacob Matthew Walker.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Bird, of Largo, Florida, Beth Hunt (Paul) and Edith Allin (Tom), all of Richmond, Virginia; three sons, Richard Bird (Nina), of Switzerland, Michael Bird, of Clearwater, Florida, and Richard McGrath (Stacy), of Hanover, Virginia; brothers, Wayne Bird (Sandy), of Fayetteville, and Fred Bird (Doneeta), of Elkins; trusted friend, Tom Moore (Lindie), of Marlinton; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the New Hope Church in Dunmore Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m. led by Pastor Julian Rittenhouse.
